Protocols
How do you feel? Unwell? Yeah, I did too. In fact, I still do... but I'm getting better, you can too.
The Protocols*
Each step here is a guide, listen to your body and alter the steps as you get more comfortable with oils. I've combined many options here.
(Note: I am not a doctor, use your good judgement and caution, research and consult your doctor please. I am having amazing results and my general doctor said to 'keep doing what you are doing'. Of course what works for one may not work well for another.)
Note: Some doTERRA oils are approved FDA food grade GRAS (generally recognized as safe), but still use caution with any usage, and be certain of quality if you buy off brand.
Bear with me, when I wrote this up it got long.
The general summary is:
1. Topical oils. (and diffusing)
2. Add vitamins.
3. Put lemon in your water.
4. A drop of Frankincense under your tongue (a.m.).
5. Internal oils** (pre-mixed or diluted capsule).
6. Add probiotics.
7. Repeat.
8. Rotate.
**Heavy-hitter, Step 5 for Lyme or co-infections; otherwise I do not generally recommend internal oils.
Also below: Timing, Antibiotic use, Herbal or Other use, Muscle Testing, Ordering oils, doTERRA's on staff Dr. Hill's presentation, and oil properties.
Perhaps you are already taking antibiotics, or finished a round and are not better, or need general detox or maybe you have issues in your gut. START OILS!
Let's get going!
TOPICAL OILS
1. Use any topical oils as needed and diffuse them. Apply on feet (& areas of concern), continue. Remember less is better. If you want more, just apply more often (not more at one time). Consistency is key. I apply every few hours while treating lyme.
Heavy hitters: Frankincense, Melaleuca, Oregano* and OnGuard* (Wild Orange, Cinnamon, Clove, Eucalyptus, & Rosemary)
*These "O" oils are "hot", apply diluted with carrier oil, wash hands, & avoid eyes. Dilute with coconut or olive oil, water does not disperse essential oils.
- Oils will absorb into your skin and get in your blood stream; the pores on your feet are the largest and the best place to apply.
In general, wherever oils are applied topically dilute with a carrier oil, like dōTERRA's Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO). Some oils you can apply neat (without a carrier). Generally the carrier oil moves the oils nicely on your skin.
(Children: bottom of feet only and highly diluted. Please seek out more resources on which oils are appropriate, or ask questions.)
Topicals that do a multitude of amazing things, are a mix of: Lemon, Lavender, Melaleuca
Dilute for babies: For my infant/toddler, the Lemon, Lavender, Melaleuca has been my go-to mix, for anything or when he had a cold or flu bug. Take a baby food jar, or something glass, and mix up 2–3 tablespoons of coconut oil & put a drop of each oil (this jar will last a good long time)... then dab on baby feet and put on socks, or put diluted oils behind ears if baby is soundly sleeping. Also put along the spine where little hands cannot reach.
The other great oil I used for my boy was calming DigestZen, a tiny bit diluted went a long way for calming his baby tummy; reflux-type issues or general gas/discomfort.
My boy is 3+ now, I often roll diluted OnGuard or Melaleuca on his feet after he falls asleep.
To manage stress or moods:
Topical or diffuse: Balance, Elevation, Citrus oils
Or for sleep, calming: Lavender, Vetiver, Serenity
For those suffering from Neuro Lyme, or those who have extreme anxiety, Melissa is an excellent oil. For best results, place a drop under your tongue or place a drop on your thumb and hold it to the roof of your mouth for 30 seconds.
If you have localized pain or inflammation, use Deep Blue muscle rub.
Get going oil troops! Topical oils go a long way for your health! You can buy a kit to get the most at one time, or buy some pre-mixed in a roller bottle.
I have found while treating Lyme I need to apply oils every 2-4 hours. Consistency is important.
If you have an active infection, progress through the steps quicker. After trying topical oils and seeing how they agree with you, move to internals.
VITAMINS
2. Take dōTERRA VITAMINS! You can take any "good" vitamins you may have. Previously, I took vitamins from the health food store and just never felt good on them, or I bought the wrong ones. (Please don't take mega doses, but try to get your body back in balance.) See the details page for more on these.
Lifelong Vitality Pack - Start by taking half the recommended dose, then take the recommended dose on the bottle if you choose (you may feel great staying at a 1/2 dose like I did, and save money).
You can do oils in addition to other herbs, just check that you are not doubling-up especially if you start doTERRA vitamins.
LEMON WATER (drinking lots of water!)
3. Put 1-3 drops of Lemon oil in all WATER and drink throughout the day. (ongoing, no break needed, keep adding lemon) Please put any oils in glass, not plastic.
Lemon is anti-microbial and helps your body move waste out of your system. (See the Cowden Protocol. He says to drink a certain amount of water or his protocol will not work.) It is that important.
Lot's of water, ok? If you don't have Lemon oil, get lemons. Stop and get some now. :) If you need to add something, add Stevia (which can be beneficial, specifically Cowden Nutrimedix, because he uses the entire plant) or Honey (amazing properties).
ALSO, expect herxing while doing something new, then it should go away. See my herxing timeline at the Lyme tab.
Herxing: your body can't get rid of toxins fast enough. Slow down or drink more water, get light exercise and get your lymph moving, whatever works best for you to detox.
FRANK UNDER TONGUE
4. Put 1-3 drops of Frankincense under your tongue daily, for at least 2 weeks. A little goes a long way. You can shoot for 1 drop and get 2 and that's fine. Just chase with water if needed.
INTERNAL OILS
5. Take GX Assist (dōTERRA pre-made capsule).
Internal: 1-3 GX pills a day, with food. (Start with 1 capsule & see how you do. I usually just use one.) Do this 10 days.
It contains this awesome stuff:
Lemon, Lemongrass, Melaleuca, Oregano, Peppermint, & Thyme. & contains Caprylic Acid (inhibits yeast, important if you took antibiotics, your gut is making even uglier bugs now).
-- OR ---
“Make your own 00 size capsule" - be sure to see recommended amounts
Fill an empty capsule (w/ at least 1:1 ratio of carrier coconut oil or olive oil – dilute),
Add: 1-3 drops of each oil in the capsule,
Take: 1-2x’s a day, be certain to swallow the capsule down with lots of water, I sometimes follow with more olive oil or honey, food, or protein drinks to further dilute.
I shoot for no more than 5 different oils in my capsule and 5–7 drop of oil at most. Some do more, but please see dosing ideals below.
Clove, Melaleuca, Oregano, Thyme, and alternate with: OnGuard, Cinnamon or Cassia (Cassia is similar to Cinnamon and stronger); and rotate Oregano out after two weeks. I also rotate in Peppermint and Lemongrass.
> Oregano, generally you SHOULD take a 2 week break after 2 weeks of Oregano, then you resume.
Your liver needs a break with anything, antibiotics or internal oils at some point, usually at a 2 week mark it's good to pulse off internals and switch to topical oils. And you'll see below adding probiotics. While taking an internal break, put oils on your feet.
You will find once you start using the oils that truly you know best regarding dosage and frequency. The key is continuing oils long after you are symptom free to ensure your symptoms do not relapse.
Option - Shorter treatment with infrared heat
Clove, Thyme, Melaleuca
& Oregano, alternated every 2 weeks with
Cinnamon & Cassia (I only do 1 drop)
1–2 drops of each oil, 2x's a day
4 weeks, take a 2 week break, repeat
The lady I know is in remission. She also did Infrared heat therapy several times a week.
She saw improvement right away (she mostly had neck pain, brain fog & extreme fatigue); she mentioned she repeated a few months, after breaks.
Option - Longer, with shorter "off" pulsing
May work better with chronic issues:
OnGuard, Melaleuca, Oregano
1-2 drops of each oil, 3x's a day
10 days on, 2 days off, repeat 90 days
I do not do well with OnGuard, but many do. If you try this, start with 1 drop.
I find chronic forms of lyme do great with pulsing off only 2–3 days. And as soon as symptoms return -- go back on. At some point you may find like me, by day 80+ I am able to pulse off and do ok on the "off" days. Early on when I pulsed off I declined very quickly. So for some, shorter pulsing off may be the key. You just step up a bunch more externals. (Pulse off Oregano as soon as you can as it can become toxic to you.)
Dosage minimum and maximum's:
(ideal 1-3 drops per dosage, Max dose 12-24 drops in a 24-hour period max. I do not recommend the highest max dose, some do that. Less is more, start in low doses. The most I've done is around 6 drops, 2x's a day. I generally shoot for less.)
https://www.doterra.com/US/en/blog/science-safety-physiology-recommended-ideal-amounts
[ The recommended internal dose of essential oils may vary, but generally is 1-5 drops, depending on the oil or blend. After a certain point, taking a higher dose no longer adds benefit. If you take too much, it can even become harmful. It is better to take a smaller dose, which can be repeated every 4–6 hours as needed. In total, typically no more than 12–24 drops, divided into doses, should be consumed in a 24-hour period. The maximum dose may be lower or higher for some oils. Extra caution must be used for hot oils. ]
I do not recommend Rosemary be ingested much. If within a combination oil I think it's ok, but look for it.
All oils should be tested topically first.
Knowing the oil properties is great to help customize based on your needs.
- Clove (anti-inflammatory, may block progress of pathogens*)
- Oregano (first line - may kill pathogens*)
- Thyme (secondary, may kill pathogens*)
- Cassia & Cinnamon (may interrupt pathogen communication*)
- Melissa (the most pricey oil) it assists with viral load, and anti-inflammatory*
- Melaleuca is anti-viral, reduces bio-films* (see details)
- OnGuard (see above for description, this is a strong blend. You can use it in place of Clove, Cassia & Cinnamon.)
Start internal oils when ready (asap if you have an active infection, lyme markers, or if not treating with antibiotics), and rotate all oils to confuse the bugs.
Lyme likes to replicate new strains or merge within human cells and hide in the body, so please keep treating long after you feel well, seeing "timing" below.
(Listen to your body. I stopped internal oils after 2 weeks and my shortness of breath came back, so I went right back to my internal oils. You'll find my list of symptoms —a timeline — over at the Lyme tab; everyone will respond differently of course.)
PROBIOTIC AND PULSING
6. Take PB Assist (doTERRA), or a good Probiotic
(I like drinking Kefir daily as well, just a cup).
Take probiotics spaced by a couple hours apart from internal oils or antibiotics.
A good general detox consists of GX Assist 2 weeks, then PB Assist 2 weeks.
The older theory was to add probiotics after a round of antibiotics, especially with longer term illness it is important to take probiotics daily. Some argue it's the probiotic that may go to battle for you the most.
REPEAT
7. REPEAT. Internal oils and Probiotics. The entire time, continue rubbing oils on the bottom of your feet, with a carrier oil: Oregano & Melaleuca
(and OnGaurd ... rotate in and diffuse).
Once you get oils, you'll get used to them and find you get more to rotate.
ROTATE
8. ROTATE OR ADD:
• DDR PRIME – a blend that includes Clove, Thym, Wild Orange, Frankincense, Lemongrass, Summer Savory, and Niaouli. (Dr. Hill, doTERRA recommends this daily for general health. Others use this as the base of their lyme protocol. Keep in mind DDR PRIME is strong. When you start it, start with 1 drop on each foot for several weeks before you increase dosage.)
• Zendrocrine – oil blend for additional detox. It contains Rosemary (the one oil that I avoid since it affects blood pressure).
• Skin Care line – includes Frankincense, Myrrh, Melaleuca, Cypress, Geranium, etc. (Once I realized Lyme was in my head & eyes, I had a renewed interest in using these products. Favorite is Verage line & Immortella.)
• OnGuard Toothpaste - a "hold-on" spot for lyme is teeth! Spirochetes love to hide. This is THE BEST toothpaste.
I tried Dr. Bronners, it's ok, but not as good. Also rotate with a black activated charcoal bentonite clay one, of course it's messy. Brush like a boss!
Topical oils to add in: I rotated ALL of these.
Rub on bottom of feet, wrist, neck... diluted with coconut oil:
Lemon, Lavender, Melaleuca: feet, spine, glands, anywhere (children, best blend!)
Immortelle blend: rubbed on wrists/hand/arms
PastTense blend: neck (this oil blend is strong, test in a small spot first)
Arborvitae: feet, diffused
Holiday Joy: feet, (has clove, cinnamon, cassis, fir)
Clove: feet, internal, arms, under jaw (teeth)/analgesic
Oregano & Melaleuca & OnGuard
TIMING:
Lyme disease is very resistant and has a long life cycle. The trick is not stopping treatment too soon. I'm taking a low dose, only 1 drop of each oil internally; while swapping with other oils, so I can treat for a much longer before switching over to a maintenance plan.
Repeat protocols above until you are symptom-free for a month or so, or try other ideas listed below.
You may find you switch up the steps ... or simply try oils topically. Much depends on your severity of symptoms and how your body handles treatment. I've used them for years and did not want them internally at first... I eased into it. I do recommend trying topically first.
Most on a Lyme journey mention 6 months to 2 years, generally after antibiotics then herbals or oils are done... slow and steady seems to win the race. Some I've talked to that only did oils, only did oils and recovered; one also did infrared heat therapy.
PURCHASING OILS:
doTERRA is referral-based, so of course I'd love to share it. The link at the footer below uses my distributor # so I get credit if you link through it or click here.
You do not need to sell oils, unless you want to, they have two options in membership:
wholesale or distributor.
When I first signed up I never imagined promoting them. Now... I would love to help you get going. I find most people just want to buy them, hassle-free, and have some guidance. I'd love to help.
If you choose to set up an account, it's exciting, you can start getting credit towards free oils and start with a new member kit to get a discount, then order as you'd like, when you like.
I listed my email below if you'd like to discuss or message me. Also find me on FB at "Midnight Mustard Oils".
ANTIBIOTICS:
Take antibiotics if prescribed. If they aren't working be sure to add something to bust up bio-films. If still not working, consult llmd - doctor, and switch.
Be aware if you have Lyme Disease that the bugs may change to cyst form and you may get worse before you get better. In a sense, they "hunker down" like a turtle going in their shell.
Some people do not do well w/ antibiotics, some do. I continue to see on all the blogs that antibiotic treatment is best if you have just pulled a tick off you, not for chronic pain or old lyme markers.
It simply comes down to this: high dosage of antibiotics required to kill Lyme may be too high a dose and toxic to your body, and create other problems, and lower immune, etc.
Who wants to be on antibiotics and not get well?
Bottom line, if you've been on it 6-8 weeks and reached a plateau, or you feel worse you need to do something else.
Do something.
JUST DON'T GIVE UP.
Oils work with your body. You need to break down the bio-film at this point. I'm confident there is hope. I've seen/heard many recover with these treatments, Use all the weapons you got. You win!
People who get better say they hit this with everything. Just keep trying things, don't give up.
Watch the Amazon Prime documentary Under Our Skin and follow-up with Under Our Skin 2: Emergence.
Many patients they showed were very ill and did get better. The documentaries do not discuss healing protocols.
One lady panned over her meds and I noticed Standard Process (a great brand). This also introduces muscle testing to the mix which I've seen several have great success with:
Muscle Testing:
My muscle testing doctor uses Standard Process brands. Some use this often, so far I've gone once and the chiropractor tested me and found: old scar tissue from injuries, adrenal issues, and heavy metals. Muscle testing is a great starting point, not a sole treatment, as it should not replace a doctor checking all things.
I had my doctor pull tests to confirm metals and adrenals. My metals were in range, though I have fillings to remove. And my adrenals were indeed spiking by mid-day and evening. So I was prescribed herbs by my doctor, (HPA Axis) filled with Holy Basil and lots of roots and berries. After I take these herbs for awhile I may switch to oils and shoot for the same result.
Helping my adrenals may keep me off thyroid meds. I test positive for Hashimoto Antibodies (doctors do not think to test them and usually just pull TSH). Request TPO—Thyroid Peroxidase. Many people with Lyme develop adrenal or thyroid issues.
Take control of your own health.
- See the 'Other' tab where I discuss herb options.
If you feel you are not responding well on anything, or unsure about essential oils ... look into herbals like Cowden and Buhner herbal protocols.
- Acupuncture is great, when you start ask for smaller needles and to start with detox channels, go slow.
- Essential Oils can replace antibiotic therapy, recommended especially if chronic. (I recommend antibiotics asap if you just got bit.)
Oil properties:
All essential oils are a combination of either anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-infectious, or anti-microbial.
I have a niffy book from AromaTools that lists all oil properties titled: "Modern Essentials: A Contemporary Guide to the Therapeutic Use"
I list some of the properties at the "Details" tab.
All protocols are sourced from many resources, other reps, Dr. Hill’s wellness protocol (doTERRA), Lyme Disease research, other lyme patients, and groups and blogs.
As I'm doing the protocols, feel free to email me. I am not a doctor. Do your own research. See your doctor. My general doc told me I was doing so well, to just keep going and she would refer me to a lyme specialist if I don't fully improve. I check in every few months and pull appropriate insurance covered blood labs.
My focus is sharing for your knowledge and wellness.
Once you start with essential oils ... you will not want to stop. And you will find you do NOT go to the pharmacy. It is a win, win.
